Lenora B. Smith Elementary was blessed to have our fifth graders take part in the Alvin Ailey Residency Program during the week of February 8th. The residency involves four dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater work with our students and teachers for an entire week. Students learn about the man and mission that was Mr. Alvin Ailey. But more importantly, though, students learned the importance of overcoming obstacles and perseverance. In addition to learning parts of Mr. Ailey's Revelations, students learned vocabulary, read biographies, practiced movement and wrote important choreography. As part of the week's events, a media day was planned. Several media outlets were on hand to learn more about the project and its donors. Mr. Carvalho, MDCPS Superintendent, stopped by to share in the festivities of media day. Along with the interviews and greeting students, Mr. Carvalho managed to practice a few dance steps too. We are thankful to Mr. Carvalho for stopping by Lenora B. Smith Elementary to speak with our students as well as the kind donors including the Miller Foundation that helped bring such a dynamic program to our students.
